Museum on Main Street – A Smithsonian Pilot Project Right Here in Grinnell

Sarah Smith, Program Manager at Grinnell College, will join the UnityPoint Health® – Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Senior Education Program on Monday, October 14 to share about Museum on Main Street. Museum on Main Street (MoMS) was created to serve museums, libraries and historical societies in rural areas, where approximately one-fifth of all Americans live.

MoMs has selected Grinnell to participate in a new pilot project to develop a local exhibition celebrating the untold stories of work in our area. The Smithsonian’s MoMs program will provide the curatorial framework for this exhibition, which will be created by a team of campus and community members – including staff, faculty and students at Grinnell College as well as local teachers, historians, students and volunteers based on stories ‘crowdsourced’ from the local community.

Together, exhibit organizers will incorporate local historical images, art and artifacts, video clips and oral histories to tell the story of work in Grinnell. The resulting exhibition will bring to light the who, what, where, why, and how of Grinnell at work, and how these developments fit within the nation’s history. The locally-curated exhibit is scheduled to open at Drake Community Library in January 2020.

Smith will highlight the steps and processes for MoMs in Grinnell that have occurred to this point and what’s in store in the coming months for planning and creating the exhibit.

The program is free and open to the public. It will be held at 10 a.m. in the Drake Community Library, with refreshments beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Parking is available at the Drake Community Library, along Park Street, on Fifth Avenue and in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot. Seniors needing transportation may call Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation at 641-236-2043 by the Thursday before the program.
